Anthony Glavin, 1945-2006

On Tuesday November 14, my dear friend Anthony Glavin died in Dublin after a lengthy illness. We first met in 1965 as students at University College, Dublin.  Anthony was a superb poet, recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award, a pianist, a teacher and a wonderful friend.  He had a brilliant mind and a wicked, delightful sense of humor.  He is loved and missed.  Here are two of Anthony's poems, fine examples of the work he was doing in recent years in a very demanding short form.

IN THE BLOOD

The same river never the same
River never the same river

Never the same river ever
The same river never the same

AN AFTERLIFE

Suddenly, glass to lips in the ballyhoo
Of the 'Open Bar' after the Service, I knew

The bewildered and unbewildered carrying on
Would all end dedicated to you.
